The song is about the importance we seem to be placing on getting to Mars and other planets because we have wrecked this one. Why not invest in our future here.

The song is set from the perspective of the new wave of colonists trying to terraform the planet, but agonising over their mistakes, wishing they were home on the Blue planet and not the red. They are sitting around playing music and drinking, much like we do here. So very human, but now new Martians. Homesick Martian Blues.
